Amazon is ending the Amazon Drive service, which is bad news for the (probably few) people who used it to store their important files in the cloud. On the bright side, you have more than a year to find an alternative and move everything.
The company says that it will stop supporting Amazon Drive on December 31, 2023. That’s when you won’t be able to get in at all. The deadline for uploads is moving up, and they won’t be accepted after January 31st. On October 31, 2022, the Android and iOS apps for Amazon Drive will stop working.
In an email to customers, Amazon said, “We will keep giving customers the ability to safely back up, share, and organize photos and videos with Amazon Photos.” But you’ll have to download any file that isn’t a picture or video. On its FAQ page, Amazon says that if you want to get back larger files, you should use the Amazon Photos desktop app for Windows or macOS. You can also cancel your Drive account by going here.
After 11 years, Amazon has decided to shut down Drive. The company says, “We are taking this opportunity to focus our efforts more fully on Amazon Photos to give customers a dedicated solution for storing photos and videos.” That could mean that Amazon has big plans for competing with Google Photos and Apple’s iCloud Photo Library. But those who were used to storing their files on Amazon’s reliable servers will be very upset by the news about Drive.
