Fans of the DC Comics character Black Canary, a martial artist who uses a bat as a weapon, can now breathe easily. TV Line has confirmed that production on the stand-alone movie based on the character will continue and that it will not be affected by the recent merger between HBO Max and Discovery+, which has already led to the cancellation of several other projects, including the highly anticipated Batgirl, Kevin Smith’s Strange Adventures, and the animated “Scoob! : Holiday Haunt.”
In 2020’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Black Canary made her first movie appearance as part of the DC Comics team with the same name. The movie did well at the box office and was liked by both audiences and critics. Even though HBO Max tried to keep the production of Black Canary (working title) a secret, word got out that the streamer was once again working with Warner Bros. and DC Films to make a movie about the character of Dinah Lance played by Jurnee Smollett.
Even though we don’t know much about the plot yet, we do know that Smollett will be back to play the same role and that the movie will be a spin-off of the first one. At the time, Smollett talked to Comicbook about how excited he was to be able to play the role again, but he couldn’t say much about what fans could expect. What she said is as follows:
“I’m just so incredibly excited about a number of things that I can’t talk about. I mean, I’m excited, that’s what I can say. I’m excited about getting to explore a lot… I feel like we’ve only touched the surface with Black Canary. And she’s one of the dopest martial artists in the DC Universe. That is something that is a real challenge in my head that I’m just excited at the possibility of being able to explore deeper and further and wider and greater.”
Black Canary Movie Release Date
Black Canary doesn’t currently have a release date but we can expect it will be air in 2023. Here is our interview with Smollett while we wait for more news to roll:
Smollett will work with screenwriter Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) once again on the forthcoming film. Both the 2016 historical drama Underground and the 2017 horror series Lovecraft Country include Smollett and Green in key roles. Black Canary’s plot points have been kept under wraps, but Green gave fans a glimpse at the film’s progress when she posted a snapshot of a thick binder with the movie’s working title on the front cover to her Instagram stories a few months ago.
DC fans had hoped that Batgirl would reveal some easter eggs on what to anticipate from the film’s eventual direction, given the lack of information about the film’s plot that has been released so far, but were taken aback when WBD abruptly cancelled the film. Happily, fans may breathe a sigh of relief now that they know the film’s production has been kept going.
