Mulroney started his professional life as a lawyer and business executive before assuming leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party and becoming prime minister. He was born in a small, working-class paper mill town in northeastern Quebec.
He was asked to join a panel in 1974 to look into the James Bay hydropower project, and he contributed to the writing of a shocking report that detailed organized crime’s infiltration of the project’s labor unions.
Mulroney led the conservatives after winning a seat in the Nova Scotia legislature in 1983. In 1984, he succeeded Pierre Trudeau of the Liberal Party as prime minister. In 1988, he easily won reelection.
