Carl Weathers’s Career

When Weathers was still playing football, he began his career as an extra. His first significant roles came in two blaxploitation films, Friday Foster (1975) and Bucktown (1975), directed by his close buddy Arthur Marks.

Early in 1975, Weathers made an appearance in the Good Times sitcom episode “The Nude.” He portrayed an enraged husband in this episode who believed his wife was having an illicit affair with J.J.

Additionally, in 1975, he had brief cameos in two television programs: “The Hero” on Cannon and “The Brothers Caine” on Kung Fu. In 1976, he had two appearances: as an escaped convict named Jack Hopper in the Barnaby Jones episode “The Bounty Hunter” and as a loan shark in an episode of the crime drama Starsky & Hutch.

During the Rocky auditions, Weathers offered criticism of Sylvester Stallone’s acting, which helped Weathers secure the role of Apollo Creed opposite Stallone. He reprised his role as Apollo Creed in the following three Rocky films: Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), and Rocky IV (1985).

Weathers has a brief appearance as an Army MP in one of the three theatrical releases of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (initially released in 1977).

In the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, starring Adam Sandler, Weathers played the role of Chubbs, a golf legend who was teaching Happy the game. She also appeared in the music video for “Liberian Girl” by Michael Jackson.

Nearly four years later, he reprised the same role in the Adam Sandler comedy Little Nicky. While filming a fall stunt for Happy Gilmore, Weathers shattered two vertebrae, and his osteophytes grew out, joined, and badly self-fused. He said he had suffered excruciating pain for three or four years.
