Elijah Wood Joins Cast for ‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2 of Showtime
Season 2 of Yellowjackets will feature Elijah Wood. On Friday, Showtime announced that the 41-year-old Lord of the Rings actor would appear in an arc throughout the upcoming season of the critically acclaimed series.
According to a network press release, Wood will play Walter, a private investigator “who will challenge Misty in ways she won’t see coming,” As of now, Christina Ricci, who has been nominated for an Emmy, plays Misty on screen.
She is one of four women, portrayed by Lynskey, Lewis, and Cypress, who have remained inextricably, uncomfortably bonded since a plane crash in 1996 left their high school soccer team stranded for 19 months in the harsh Canadian wilderness.
In 1996, Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Courtney Eaton, and Liv Hewson played teenage versions of the Yellowjackets.
As the adult Yellowjackets are haunted by their memories and blackmailed by an anonymous stalker who knows what happened in the woods, the show cuts back and forth between the two eras. Ricci’s Misty, the eager-to-please saboteur, was on a pathologically unethical course by the end of Season 1.
The 42-year-old Addams Family alum discussed the various fan theories surrounding her character’s duplicity with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show back in April. Fallon addressed the theory that Misty is a modern serial killer.
“She kills someone coldly and has a hideout set up for kidnappings. The bunker was in good working order, “Ricci said, “That is a possibility,” he said.
Given that she has been given no information about what is to come, she states, “I would say that she has probably done it before, but I don’t know,” Two new cast members were recently announced for Season 2.
Hewson plays a young version of Vanessa “Van” Palmer, and Six Feet Under alum Lauren Ambrose will recur as the adult version of the character (Hewson has also been upped to series regular for the sophomore season).
Teenage Lottie is portrayed by Courtney Eaton, and Simone Kessell, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi, is stepping in to play the adult version of Lottie (another actress promoted to series regular for season 2).
Yellowjackets were renewed for a second season in December, ahead of schedule, following widespread acclaim. However, it was recently announced by the show’s producers that the return of the popular drama would not happen until 2019.
Ashley Lyle, the show’s co-creator and showrunner, told The Wrap that the estimated return date is the first quarter of 2023. “Timewise, we are right where we were at this point last season, though we do need to shoot an extra episode since we already filmed the pilot. Production is expected to wrap up in early to mid-February, and the show should premiere soon after.”
The entire first season of Yellowjackets is now available to watch online via the Showtime app.
