First Country: New Music from Drake Milligan, Scotty McCreery, and More

First Country is a collection of this week’s best new country songs, music videos, and albums.

Drake Milligan, Dallas/Fort Worth

This Stoney Creek musician’s new album comes after he did well on the music show America’s Got Talent, where he finished in the top three this week.Even though he did not win first place, he showed a lot of people his strong voice and polished stage presence. After his time on America’s Got Talent, he put out this 14-song album, which has Milligan’s name on every track.

The songs “Save It For a Sunny Day” and “Hating Everything She Tries On,” the barroom burner “Tippin’ Point,” and “Long Haul,” in which Milligan uses an Elvis-like vocal swagger, are all on the album. “Long Haul” also features James Burton, who played guitar for Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977. Burton is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member.

“Goin’ Down Swingin’,” a tremendous Western Swing tribute with Vince Gill on it, and “Cowboy Kind of Way,” the last song on the album, come to a close. A good start for this new person.

“Brave Girl” by Callista Clark

Clark wrote this uplifting song for her fellow teenage girls. She wants to encourage those who are afraid to speak up, be seen, and take risks. As she did with her big hit, “It is Cause I Am,” she exudes confidence and wisdom that have been earned the hard way. This uplifting pop song has one of her best vocal performances to date. It is a must-have for anyone who needs a little extra motivation.

“Nothin’ Right” by Scotty McCreery

This is McCreery’s first single from the deluxe version of his album Same Truck, which comes out on November 18. It is about being an overachiever at “doin’ nothing,” It has snappy percussion, a drawling guitar, and McCreery’s warm vocals.

Smith, Conner “Take It Slow” by Ryan Hurd.

Smith teams up with one of his “Take It Slow” co-writers, artist and songwriter Ryan Hurd, for this stripped-down version that brings out the lyrics’ descriptions of exciting, time-stopping moments in a new relationship..

Koe Wetzel, “Money Spent”

With this main track from his newly released album Hell Paso, Texas musician Wetzel solidifies his reputation as a musical “hell-raiser.” This song is a mix of raging, grungy rock, careening guitar leads, and Red Dirt country sounds, and it is the centerpiece of the album. Sonic Ranch Studio, near El Paso, Texas, is where the 13 songs on Hell Paso were recorded.

Mike Ryan, “Die Runnin'”

In this song, Mike Ryan is sad about a relationship that did not work out, but he still cares about the person and is ready to start loving them again at any time. The song’s fast-paced percussion and Ryan’s urgent voice give it a mood of discontent. “Die Runnin'” will be on Ryan’s new album Longcut, which comes out on Oct. 28.
