Gilbert Jeremy Gottfried was an American stand-up comedian and actor born on February 28, 1955. He was well known for his loud, shrill voice, thick New York accent, and edgy, frequently contentious brand of humor.
Iago in the Aladdin animated series, Digit LeBoid in Cyberchase, Kraang Subprime in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Aflac Duck were just a few of his many roles in movies and television up until he was dismissed in 2011 and replaced by Daniel McKeague. According to his relatives, comedian Gilbert Gottfried passed away. He was 67. In a statement posted to his Twitter account, his family said they were “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness.”
Myotonic dystrophy type II caused Gottfried’s recurrent ventricular tachycardia, which caused him to pass away at 2:35 p.m., according to his longtime friend and publicist Glenn Schwartz.
Gottfried, who performed stand-up comedy for over 50 years, became known as “the comedian’s comedian” “because his live performances put aside political correctness while he delivers jokes that know no boundaries,” his representative said in a statement.
His humorous abilities earned him parts in movies including “The Aristocrats,” “Problem Child,” “Look Who’s Talking II,” “Beverly Hills Cop II,” and others. Additionally, he provided the voice of the witty parrot Iago in the classic animated movie “Aladdin” from Disney.
A more recent documentary on him, “Gilbert,” was made about his life in 2017. Additionally, he and Frank Santopadre co-hosted the podcast “Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast!” where they conducted interviews with famous actors and directors.
His family described him as “the most iconic voice in comedy,” as well as a “wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children.”
“Although today is a sad day for us all, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor,” his family wrote.

On social media, other celebrities also paid tribute to Gottfried by sharing memories and describing the impact he had on their lives.
“I am so sad to read about the passing of Gilbert Gottfried,” Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin wrote on Twitter. “Funny, politically incorrect but a softie on the inside. We met many times; he even pranked me on a plane, replacing my intepreter @655jack (they’re like twins). Sending love to Dara & his children.”

Dara, his wife, his daughter Lily, 14, his son Max, 12, his sister Karen, and his nephew Graham all survive Gottfried.
