Grant Henry Hill was born on October 5, 1972, in Dallas, Texas. His parents are Janet Hill and Calvin Hill, a former NFL football player. He grew up in Texas but moved with his family to Reston, Virginia, near Washington, DC, during high school. He attended South Lakes High School and was named Virginia Mr. Basketball in 1990.
Hill’s mother wanted him to go to Georgetown University, but his father wanted him to go to the University of North Carolina. Hill, on the other hand, chose Duke University as her university of choice. He was a four-year member of the Duke basketball team, helping the team win national titles in 1991 and 1992.
Duke became the first Division basketball program since Indiana University in 1976 to win consecutive championships. During his undergraduate career, Hill set a record by becoming the first player in ACC history to have over 1,900 points, 700 rebounds, 400 assists, 200 steals, and 100 blocked shots.

Grant Hill Professional Career
The Detroit Pistons selected Hill third overall in the NBA draft after he graduated from college. He averaged 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.77 steals per game in his first professional season.
As a result, he became the first Piston since Dave Bing in the 1966-67 season to earn the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, albeit he had to share the accolade with Dallas Mavericks rookie Jason Kidd.

Thus, Hill signed a seven-year, $92.8 million contract with the Pistons before being traded to Orlando in exchange for players Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace. Hill, on the other hand, suffered an ankle injury during his rookie season with Orlando, forcing him to miss all but four games.
