Gurdas Maan sings on being misunderstood about ‘one nation, one language’ in his new song

“Gal Sunoh Punjabi Dosto,” a single by Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan, was finally released on Wednesday. The 2019 ‘one nation, one language’ debate that the Punjabi vocalist found themselves in is chronicled in the song.

The song details the struggles Maan faced when the message he intended to convey about his support for the “one nation, one language” idea was misunderstood. In it, he addresses the people of Punjab to dispel the rumor that he is opposed to the Punjabi language because of his support for the “one nation, one language” movement.

In the 8 minutes and 27-second clip, Mann is surrounded by critics as he explains his original comments and expresses gratitude to those who stuck by him through his “substandard” period. The musician had been criticized by native Punjabis and those in the Punjabi diaspora after an interview on a Punjabi radio station in Canada where he appeared to toe the “one nation, one language” line.

After a video of famous Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan went viral, members of the Satkar Committee filed a police complaint. In the video, Maan is heard saying that the chief of a Dera and Nakodar, Sain Laddi Shah, is a descendant of the third Sikh master, Guru Amar Dass.

The committee threatened a protest across Punjab if a complaint was not filed against the singer. The singer reportedly made the statement at a mela in Nakodar, prompting the members to protest outside the SSP office and threaten to gherao the building if the officials there do not take action against Maan.

The committee members said Maan’s words were part of a calculated plot to offend Sikh sensibilities.
