Halsey Had Three Miscarriages Before She Had Her Baby, And She Says That Having An Abortion Saved Her Life.
Halsey had their first child after losing multiple pregnancies, but that didn’t change the fact that they support the right to have an abortion.
The singer, whose son Ender turns 1 this month, wrote about their experiences in an op-ed that was published in Vogue on July 1. This was a week after the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, which had recognized the constitutional right to abortion in the United States for almost 50 years.
“Many people have asked me if I have changed my mind about abortion now that I have given birth to a child after struggling for years to do so. The clear answer is no, “Halsey typed. “I have never felt more strongly about it than I do now.”
The 27-year-old had talked about one of their miscarriages in public before, saying that it happened while they were on tour in 2015. The singer wrote in their Vogue op-ed that they “miscarried three times” before they turned 24. They also said, “It seemed cruelly ironic that I could easily get pregnant but struggled to keep a pregnancy going.”
Halsey went on, “After one of my miscarriages, I needed “aftercare,” which is a nice way of saying I needed an abortion because my body couldn’t end the pregnancy on its own and I could have gotten sepsis if I didn’t get help. I cried during this process. I was scared and couldn’t do anything about it. I wanted so badly to end the pregnancy, which was putting my life in danger.”
The National Library of Medicine says that medical terms for miscarriages include “spontaneous abortions,” “missed abortions,” and “incomplete abortions.” These terms are used for billing and insurance claims.
If a failed pregnancy doesn’t end on its own, the patient may have to wait longer, take pills to try to speed up the process, or go through surgery with or without sedation. The last two methods are also usually used when a woman wants to end a healthy pregnancy.
Halsey wrote, “My abortion saved my life and made it possible for my son to be born.” “Everyone should be able to decide when, if, and how they want to go through this dangerous and life-changing experience. I’ll hold my son in one arm and fight with all my strength in the other.”
On June 26, two days after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Halsey had a concert in Phoenix, Arizona. She spoke out against the decision, which made a lot of people leave the show.
Halsey said onstage, “Some of the people I’m looking at right now will need an abortion one day, and you deserve that.” “No matter if it’s dangerous to your life or not, you deserve it. And here in Arizona, you guys have to promise me that you’ll do that work so that the person to your left and your right will always have that right.”
In addition, “You can leave right now if you don’t like it. I don’t care. I don’t know why you went to a Halsey show if you don’t like it.”
After getting bad reviews for what they said on stage, Halsey tweeted, “The argument that people pay to see you sing, not to hear your ideas, is so stupid. No, you paid to see me use a stage to express myself however I wanted. Sorry, you don’t have enough critical thinking to know that the persuasive power of music doesn’t always help you get away from things.”
They went on to say, “Since May, when my tour began, I’ve had facts about abortion in my show. 16,500 people came to my last show. My fans are on the right side of history, so I’ll be fine.”
