In addition, sea salt, garlic, and onions are all found in Jada Spices Turmeric Salt. Nutritionally dense and helpful for inflammatory diseases, according to the manufacturer. Although the proprietor of Jada Spices Vegan Chicken Salt first introduced the product in America in 2015, it has its roots in Australia.
All of their goods are natural and made without the use of any artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners. The American Heart Association has released findings showing that processed foods account for as much as 70 percent of the sodium that the average person consumes every day.
The creator of Jada Spices got this, so her salts are 50% less sodium than the competition and subtle enough that people with hypertension and diabetes can enjoy them. Jada Spices was formed in 2015 by Khasha Toulei and Maynard Okereke with the goal of inspiring people to cook at home in order to save money and eat better.
Khasha and Maynard first crossed paths in 2002, both as UW students. Khasha subsequently began medical school, while Maynard interned with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While its inventor was in school, the concept for Jada Spices Vegan Chicken Salt emerged.
Working with patients who suffered from diabetes and hypertension, he frequently witnessed their struggles to maintain a healthy diet. They had to stick to their diet but were craving something more exciting.
In Australia, where Khasha grew up, Khasha recalled that his mother used chicken salt to season the foods he didn’t care for. After doing so, Khasha became interested in eating the dishes because of the increased flavor intensity. The company’s founder was optimistic that using this product would improve his patients’ dietary habits.
While chicken salt isn’t exactly a hidden gem down under, it’s possible that many outside of Australia haven’t yet tried it because of this, Khasha and Maynard decided to introduce Jada Spices to the United States market. His patients couldn’t have regular chicken salt, so he set out to create a vegan, low-sodium alternative that would also add flavor to food.

Khasha and Maynard ran several marketing activities to get the ball rolling on sales once they officially introduced Jada Spices. They even adopted the tagline “Love of Chicken Salt” for themselves. Later, they participated in Chicago’s First Vegan Mania Festival, where they gave away free samples of Vegan Chicken Salt to festival-goers.
Customers provided constructive criticism and compliments, appreciating the chicken salt’s usefulness and noting its compatibility with vegan diets. The owners of Jada Spices, seeing their product’s meteoric ascent to fame, decided to take their wares to the popular reality show Shark Tank in the hopes that the show’s celebrity investors would be similarly impressed.
Shark Tank Features Jada Spices
Khasha Toulei and Maynard Okereke present their new spice firm, Jada Spices, on the ABC show Shark Tank. The startup’s founders are looking for a $250,000 investment in exchange for 20 percent ownership of the business.
The entrepreneurs kick off their presentation by introducing themselves and giving the sharks a brief rundown of Jada Spices. They provide the sharks with a sample of their Vegan Chicken Spice to judge for themselves.
Initial feedback from investors is positive; the spice has a good flavor, and they are thankful to Khasha and Maynard for coming up with the concept. The sharks were engaged, and the pitch was progressing well because they wanted to hear about the sales.
In 2019, four years after their first debut, the company’s founders reported a total revenue of $319,000. Khasha also predicted that by 2020, sales would exceed $500,000. However, this information only accounts for sales of their Vegan Chicken Salt, which has a production cost of $0.80 yet sells for $4.99.
Upon hearing these figures, the sharks were impressed, yet some of them finally decided to pass on the offer. Investors were initially concerned about the high barriers to entry in the spice market. Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Mark Cuban, and Daymond John all dropped out as a result.
This prompted Barbara Corcoran to make a deal where she would give up 33% of the company in exchange for $250,000 to Khasha and Maynard. In response, the founder offers 28% ownership to the shark, who remains unmoved. After hearing her offer, Khasha and Maynard took her up on it.
Jada Spices Now in 2023 – The After Shark Tank Update
While Khasha Toulei and Maynard Okereke’s deal with Barbara Corcoran has unfortunately closed as of 2021, the Jada Spices business is still operating as of 2023. Their sales increased immediately following their appearance on Shark Tank. In addition, well-known names in the entertainment industry and the culinary industry have sought out Jada Brands.

The company’s founders also rebranded themselves as Jada Brands just before releasing some new items. Their latest offerings include vegan Chick’n mixes with flavor profiles ranging from Mediterranean to barbecue. The owners of Jada Brands reported that by midway through 2022, the company had made $4 million in sales.
At roughly the same period, the company was estimated to be worth $757,000. The growing popularity of this spice, however, suggests that these figures may soon rise. Khasha and Maynard are hard at work strengthening the business and the packaging till then.
