Born on September 23, 1972, in College Park (the Atlanta metropolitan region), Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was raised by Columbia Records executive Michael Mauldin and Tina (Mosley). Dupri started his artistic career at the age of nine.
In 1982, Dupri’s father, a talent manager in Atlanta, organized a Diana Ross concert. To the astonishment of the audience, Dupri was able to enter the stage and dance with Ross. At the age of twelve, Dupri began performing as a dancer for the hip-hop group Whodini.
Their music video for the song “Freaks Come Out at Night” featured him. Before opening for Run-D.M.C., Whodini, and Grandmaster Flash at the New York Fresh Festival, he started doing national tours with Herbie Hancock and Cameo.

Jermaine Dupri’s Career
His first act was the female hip-hop group Silk Tymes Leather, released in 1990. After meeting the boys at a mall in 1991, he formed Kris Kross (Chris Kelly and Chris Smith). Dupri wrote and produced “Jump” and “Warm It Up” for the group’s 1992 debut album, Totally Krossed Out, which went multi-platinum.
His record label So So Def was founded in 1993. He signed the female R&B group Xscape to the company after discovering them at an Atlanta festival. Dupri produced their debut album, Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, which went platinum with the singles “Understanding,” “Love on My Mind,” “Tonight,” and “Just Kickin’ It,” reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
He signed Da Brat to So So Def Recordings in 1994 after meeting her through Kris Kross on Yo! MTV Raps. Her debut album Funkdafied (1994) went platinum. 1993 saw So So Def Recordings unite with Columbia Records for distribution.
The 1995 number-one song “Always Be My Baby.” was his debut collaboration with Mariah Carey. They were featured on “Not Tonight” from Lil’ Kim’s 1996 album Hard Core.
He co-wrote and produced MC Lyte (“Keep On, Keepin’ On”), The Braxtons (“So Many Ways”), and Whodini (“Keep Running Back”) tracks that year. Dupri produced Kris Kross’ third and final studio album and its modestly popular singles (“Tonite’s the Night” and “Live and Die for Hip Hop”) in 1996.
He succeeded Randy Jackson as Mariah Carey’s talent manager on October 7, 2013. He left Carey in August 2014, but they still work together as he produced most of her albums since Daydream (1995): Mariah Carey and Jagged Edge’s 2014 album Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse and J.E. Heartbreak 2 used Dupri’s production.
The Rap Game was a 2015 reality show by Dupri and Queen Latifah. The eight-episode Lifetime series launched on New Year’s Day 2016. Five 11–16-year-olds immersed themselves in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene to become rap stars. Guest stars Usher, Ludacris, Da Brat, T.I., and Silentó advised opponents on how to succeed in the industry.
In 2018, he joined the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Dupri became the second hip-hop artist admitted, behind Jay-Z. In 2018, Jermaine Dupri and “So So Def” celebrated 25 years of elevating culture at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Dupri produced “If I Get Caught” with Dvsn in 2022.
