After a protracted struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, the actor passed suddenly in Los Angeles on February 24. According to an obituary that was placed on his Instagram on February 25, Mitchell is survived by his wife, his son Kallum, 11, and daughter Lilah, 16, as well as his parents, brother, and other family members.
“Ken was diligent and hardworking in everything he did, but as a father, these traits found their fullest expression,” it stated. “He put a lot of effort into making sure his kids had fun and that their lives were positive. Ken found a higher calling to be a more complete version of himself for his children, in spite of his subsequent impairments. Ken will always be pleased with the people his kids have grown into.”
Toronto native Mitchell debuted as an actor in the early 2000s, starring in Leap Year on Showtime. Later, he portrayed Sam Lucas on Ghost Whisperer and Eric Green on Jericho. He was featured in Captain Marvel and Nancy Drew on The CW in 2019.
As he was beginning to experience the effects of ALS, he started to appear on Star Trek: Discovery, where he played four roles between 2017 and 2021: Klingons Kol, Kol’s father Kol-Sha, and Tenavik. Later, he played the human character Aurellio, who needed a hoverchair or wheelchair-like device.

The last time Mitchell was seen on TV was in a recurring role on the Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow-starring FX series The Old Man. Mitchell had been using a wheelchair since 2019 after receiving an ALS diagnosis in 2018. ALS is a neurological disease that results in muscle loss and paralysis.
According to his obituary, “Ken faced a series of awful challenges from ALS for five and a half years.” And in typical Ken’s form, he overcame them all with dignity and a dedication to living a whole and happy life every single day.
He lived by the idea that life is a gift every day and that we are never truly alone. His life serves as a brilliant example of how rich life can be when it is filled with love, kindness, humor, community, and inclusion. Ken was an example to everyone he came into contact with.”
His coworkers and friends were among them. “Ken, rest in peace. I was thinking of you,” Star Trek: Discovery actor Ethan Peck wrote in a comment on the obituary, emoji-ing the Vulcan hand motion that says “Live Long and Prosper.” Jonathan Frakes, who portrayed William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation and directed multiple episodes of the show, also added, “One of the best RIP.”
