When Steen was 14, his parents let him train with Quebec wrestler Serge Jodoin. Next year, Steen introduced Jacques Rougeau. He trained with Terry Taylor, his “main trainer”. Steen turned 16 on May 7, 2000, in L’Assomption, Quebec, and had his first match.
Steen trained and competed for Rougeau for four years before wrestling for other Canadian firms. Steen debuted with IWS at Born to Bleed on August 16, 2003. Pierre Carl Ouellet beat El Generico and Steen in a triple-threat match at Blood, Sweat, and Beers on October 18, 2003.
El Generico beat Steen in their first singles bout at Payback’s A Bitch on November 15. At IWS’s 5th anniversary show “V” at Le SPAG on June 15, 2004, El Generico defeated PCO to win his first IWS World Heavyweight Championship.
