Early Life & Education
The second son of Bobby Horan and Maura Gallagher, they named him Niall. He was born on September 13, 1993. Greg Horan, his older brother, was a year ahead of him in age. Family members were based in Mullingar, a relatively modest city in Ireland.
Niall’s parents divorced when he was five years old, and he and his siblings moved in with their mother. As a result of his asthma, he had to fight for his health.
Niall went to school in Mullingar, where he participated in extracurricular activities like the school choir and plays. When it came time for him to enter secondary education, he enrolled at Mullingar’s Coláiste Mhuire (Mary’s College). As a young man, he gave performances at Dublin’s The Academy and the Mullingar Arts Centre (the latter as a benefit for the hometown Shamrocks football club).
Competing on ‘The X Factor’
Back in 2010, when he was only 16 years old, Horan tried out for the TV talent show The X Factor. He auditioned multiple times, with the final round taking place in Dublin in front of the show’s judges (including Simon Cowell and guest judge Katy Perry).
Following his rendition of “Ne-“So Yo’s Sick,” he was officially entered into the competition. The judges picked Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson to be in the boy band One Direction, even though Louis Tomlinson didn’t make it past the semifinals as a soloist.
Professional Career of Niall Horan
Niall’s aunt was a big influence on him to audition for “The X Factor” in 2010. Even though he was eliminated at the Bootcamp round, his life was about to be turned upside down.
Niall and four other boys around the same age were grouped together by judge Simon Cowell and told to form a band. In season seven of “The X Factor,” Simon served as the group’s mentor, and under his tutelage, the boys came in third place in the competition’s group round.
Niall, Zayn, Harry, Louis, and Liam all remained a part of the band known as “One Direction,” and Niall was one of the band’s regular members. Many of their songs have become radio staples, earning them millions of devoted followers known as “Directioners.”
Unfortunately, after releasing their fifth studio album, One Direction decided to take a break. The band members all came to this conclusion independently. But it was a wrench to end such a star-studded adventure.
Niall, however, progressed along with life. He got a record deal with Capitol Records and dropped his first single, “This Town,” that same year. He followed that up with the album Slow Hands a year later. The two singles reached number one on charts around the world.
In 2017, before his debut album “Flicker” was released, Niall announced a world tour. The five-month world tour not only increased his fame but also served as an arena to promote the album.
When it was released in the fall of 2017, ‘Flicker’ broke records for its pre-sale and climbed to the top of the Billboard 200.
Niall’s second album, titled “Heartbreak Weather,” was released as a result of his growing fame. Reviews of the album’s pop tracks were overwhelmingly positive.
Niall was forced to postpone his 2020 promotional tour when news of the pandemic broke. They worked together on a song titled “Our Song” in 2021.
Personal Life
Niall is frequently spotted at various golf tournaments. He was a part of the pro-am at the BMW PGA Championship. At the 2015 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, he caddied for professional golfer Rory McIlroy in the Par 3 competition. Additionally, he is an avid rugby supporter who frequently attends Ireland and Leinster games.
