Oregon Issues An Apology for Fans Chanting “F—k the Mormons” During BYU Football Game

Sunday, the University of Oregon apologized to Brigham Young University in a statement for Ducks fans chanting “f—k the Mormons” during a 41-20 win. Sunday, the governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, shared a video of the NSFW chants: In a tweet, the state’s governor, Kate Brown, said, “In Oregon, we strive to be a welcoming, inclusive state to all, regardless of race, religion, gender, or background,”

“Discrimination and bigotry have a long and ugly history in our state and country. The chant at yesterday’s game between Oregon and BYU was wrong. We must do better.” Last year, when USC beat BYU 35-31 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, USC fans made rude chants at BYU fans.

In a statement at the time, the school said that the chanting “does not fit with what we value as Trojans. It was unpleasant, so we are sorry about the BYU program.” Some students at the University of Oregon were seen and heard chanting “f*** the Mormons” during Saturday’s game between the Ducks and BYU.

The school apologized on social media Sunday, calling the fans’ chants “offensive and disgraceful.” The school said, “These types of actions go against everything the university stands for, and it goes against the spirit of competition,” “We can and will do better as a campus community with no place for hate, bias, or bigotry.”

After a Cougars touchdown in the second quarter of BYU’s 41–20 loss, the chants started at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. Several people yelled rude things while clapping their hands. Video taken by spectators shows that the chants happened at least once more during the game.

Some fans at the game were angry, and after the game, Utah’s governor, Spencer Cox, criticized the Ducks fans for it. “Religious bigotry alive and celebrated in Oregon,” he wrote on Twitter. After Oregon’s apology, Cox tweeted with a heart emoji.

The “Oregon Pit Crew,” which is Oregon’s student section, also tweeted an apology after the game. It said, “We do not condone or support any hateful speech directed towards one’s religion and are ashamed of those who participated.” This is not the first time a university has had to apologize for chants at a BYU game. In November, USC apologized for fans who yelled “f*** the Mormons” at a football game in L.A.
