In Detroit, Kane lived with veteran NHL player Pat Verbeek, a mentor and one of his main reasons for moving. Kane had 83 goals and 77 assists with Honeybaked, who went 66–3–1.
After his achievement, the London Knights drafted him in the fifth round, 88th overall, in the 2004 OHL Midget Draft. The US National Team Development Program (NTDP) in Michigan was where Kane played instead of the team.
