“I’m completely exhausted. I thought my wild nights were over, but these are some of the wildest nights I’ve ever had,” the newlywed said in a 2014 cover story interview with Violet Grey.
Mendes also revealed the source of their first child’s name. She remarked, “We were really excited about naming her.” “Ryan and I both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame,’ and we just think it’s a beautiful name. Amada was my grandmother’s name. It means ‘beloved’ in Spanish.”
In a May 2023 interview with GQ magazine, Gosling talked back on the occasion when Mendes gave him the big news. “Eva said she was pregnant,” he said, adding, “I would never want to go back, you know? I’m glad I didn’t have control over my destiny in that way because it was so much better than I ever had dreamed for myself.”
Amada Lee Gosling, 7
On April 29, 2016, the couple welcomed their second child, a daughter they named Amada Lee Gosling. Once more, Mendes and Gosling kept their pregnancy a secret from the world, revealing their infant baby’s identity precisely one month before it was born.
The expecting mother had a difficult time during this time because her brother Carlos Mendes passed away from cancer just 12 days before Amada was born.
“We had a funeral service for (Carlos), and that same week I had the baby. So it was really, really intense and obviously beyond heartbreaking, but also beautiful,” the actress told Latina magazine for its September 2016 issue, per People.
Mendes revealed the meaning behind naming her second child Amada in the same interview. She said, “My grandmother is named Amada.” “We had a few names picked out for our new baby, and when she was born, we didn’t feel like those names were her. We came up with a few more, even that morning, and tried them out. We were like, ‘What about Viviana?’
She went on, “But we just kept going back to Amada. We reuse names all the time, in true Latin fashion.” “I used to know five sisters that were all Maria del Carmen, Maria Elena, Maria Liliana … And with my brother’s demise, it was a difficult period. We thought, How beautiful to go with what made us emotional and with what felt like her. When we looked at her, we thought, Aww, Amadita.”

What Has Ryan Gosling Said About His Daughters?
In his victory speech at the 2017 Golden Globes—where he won for “La La Land”—Gosling paid tribute to his wife and girls. He remarked, “While I was singing and dancing and playing piano … my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.” “Sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you.”
His girls influence not just his remarks but the roles he plays as well. Gosling told GQ that his daughters’ casual contempt for Barbie’s male counterpart served as the clue he needed to understand his road to becoming Ken in Greta Gerwig’s 2022 “Barbie” movie.
“I did see him, like, face down in the mud outside one day, next to a squished lemon,” Gosling said, “and it was like, ‘This guy’s story does need to be told,’ you know?”
When the actor appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in July 2022 to promote the pink-powered movie, he disclosed that Amada is capable of a daring move that even the Louvre in Paris cannot resist.
He said, “My youngest has a real power move.” “We were standing in front of the ‘Mona Lisa,’ and she goes, ‘This museum?’” Then Gosling imitated his daughter’s thumbs-down gesture. “I said, ‘Why?’” he said. “She went, ‘Because it is not good.’”
He said that occasionally when she exits a room, she also displays the classic thumbs-down symbol behind her back. The dismissive walk-away. It’s at the level of a Roman Emperor, he remarked.
