Sonic the Hedgehog 3 finally has a release date, but it will be a while before we can play as the fast blue hedgehog again.
Early in August 2022, Paramount announced that the threequel would come out in theatres in December 2024. This is a bit longer than what Sonic fans are used to waiting between movies.
Before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out in theatres, Paramount and Sega announced there would be a third movie and a spin-off series about Knuckles, who made his debut in the second movie. Idris Elba provided the voice for Knuckles.
We think that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will have the same director, Jeff Fowler, and writers, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who worked on the first two movies and made them successful. However, this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Release Date
If everything goes as planned, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be in theatres on December 20, 2024.
It’s different from the last two movies, which came out earlier in the year (February 2020 and April 2022, respectively). The fact that these movies did well at the box office shows that a Christmas release makes a lot of sense.
No one has said when production on the third movie will begin, but we think it will have to start by 2023 at the latest.

More Details On Sonic The Hedgehog 3
No information about the actors or writers has been made public. Pat Casey and Josh Miller wrote the scripts for the first two movies, which were directed by Jeff Fowler and starred Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic’s “parents.” All of them are likely to come back.
Jim Carrey’s role as Doctor Robotnik will be the biggest unknown. The star told Access Hollywood that he was “fairly serious” about giving up acting after appearing in Sonic 2. Carrey has taken long breaks from his career before, but he said he would think about coming back for “some kind of script written in gold ink that tells me it’s going to be really important for people to see.” It’s likely that he wasn’t talking about games like Sonic 3, no matter how good they turn out to be. But after the huge success of the first two movies, Paramount will do anything to get him to change his mind.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Plot Speculation
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 doesn’t have an official plot summary. Still, we can guess that Shadow the hedgehog will be the next bad guy to try to stop our favorite blue hero because of how Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ended and what happened after the credits.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 concluded with Dr. Robotnik’s downfall at the hands of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. Once Sonic and his new family reclaimed Master Emerald from Dr. Robotnik, they made it their mission in life to protect the ancient power source. Dr. Robotnik’s body, however, was never found, suggesting that the villainous scientist may still make another appearance.
It was stated in Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s end credits that a new antagonist, Shadow, would be joining Dr. Robotnik in his pursuit of Master Emerald. GUN (Guardian Units of Nations) found some hidden coordinates to an abandoned facility where “Project Shadow” was underway after cleaning up the aftermath of Sonic’s last battle with Dr. Robotnik. In the preview footage, we see a black hedgehog open his eyes and get ready to unleash mayhem.
Shadow is Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather Gerald Robotnik’s creation, and he made his debut in the 2001 video game Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow is typically portrayed as a villain in the games. Nonetheless, he is usually on Sonic’s side despite his edgy style and attitude. However, with Dr. Robotnik no longer a major antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, an alliance between Sonic and Shadow is unlikely to materialize in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Tika Sumpter and Natasha Rothwell, who play human characters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, recently discussed their expectations for their characters with The Digital Fix. Natasha hopes the next chapter would have more action for the two sisters, while Sumpter argued that it would be interesting to learn more about Maddie’s work as a veterinarian. It’s not apparent if their hopes will be realized at this point, but we’re pulling for deeper explorations of characters in the future.
