At a sectionals meet in Orlando, Florida, Canadian Summer McIntosh defeated American swimming sensation Katie Ledecky by almost 6 seconds, ending Ledecky’s 13-year winning streak in the 800-meter freestyle race.
On Thursday, McIntosh outran Ledecky to the pool’s wall at the Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center. With a time of 8 minutes 11.39 seconds, the 17-year-old set a Canadian record for the event and sealed the upset. The time for Ledecky was 8:17.12.
American 14-year-old Brinkleigh Hansen came in third (8:47.12). Ledecky had won seven gold medals from her ten Olympic medals, and she hadn’t lost an 800-meter freestyle since 2010. In the women’s event, she still holds the 16 fastest times ever, including the world record (8:04.79), set in the Summer Games of 2016.
At the 2012 and 2020 Summer Games, the 26-year-old swimming star also took home gold in the 800M. This summer in Paris, she is anticipated to try to make history as the first female Olympic swimmer to win four gold medals in a row.
McIntosh made her Olympic debut in the 2020 Summer Games, and she is also anticipated to compete in Paris. In the 400-meter freestyle, she set a new Canadian record with a time of 4:02.42, finishing fourth.
