There are spoilers in this Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi season one, episode one recap for the segment titled “Life and Death” on Disney+
The first Tales of the Jedi episode, which also happens to be the first of three episodes centered on Ahsoka Tano, is a subdued, almost tranquil 20 minutes that introduces the concept of Ahsoka’s strength in a way that deviates greatly from the norm for Star Wars. We’ll get to the lightsaber duel and robot shootouts later, so don’t worry. Right now, it’s time to reconnect with nature.
Tales Of The Jedi Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
As far as I’m aware, this is the earliest account of Ahsoka’s background; in fact, it can’t be any older because it takes place around the time of her real birth in a peaceful Togruti village. However, “Life and Death” is entirely fresh and adorable. In Ahsoka, a book for young adults by E. K. Johnston, there were more details about her life after Order 66 that would be explored in later episodes.
The birth of Ahsoka is marked with a lot of ceremonies. Her mother, Pav-ti (Janina Gavankar), is remarkably similar to the adult she will develop into. Pav-ti takes Ahsoka hunting when she is a year old, possibly against her better judgment, but there are many lessons to be taught-particularly about life and death on the journey. However, there is some risk present, as is demonstrated when Pav-ti kills a kybuck and is then attacked from behind by an animal whose name I do not know but which resembles a saber-toothed tiger on steroids.
As Ahsoka is being taken deeper into the forest, the tiger attacks Pav-ti and attacks Pav-ti. Sunil Malhotra’s Nak-il, Ahsoka’s father, rushes to stop the kidnapping but it is too late. The villagers decide to hunt the beast down after regrouping. Fortunately, Ahsoka has everything under control.
The infant would have likely thrown the tiger around its cave and spent the night resting among its internal organs if this were Luke Skywalker or someone else. Ahsoka, however, has a more visible sensitivity to the Force. The monster rests after receiving a bop on the nose from her, the Force’s might flowing through them both. Ahsoka rides out of the village on the tiger before the residents have even had a chance to depart, and the tiger gently drops Ahsoka at their feet. The village elder, Gantika (Toks Olagundoye), declares the youngster to be a Jedi, and he does so with great justification.
It’s a good beginning, exploring more of Togruti culture and showing how the Force can be used to achieve empathy, understanding, and common ground in addition to being about lightning and lightsabers. And obviously, riding tigers, which is always
