The Crown season 5 is almost here, yet we’ve still not seen a trailer for the upcoming part of the acclaimed Netflix show. Of course, that does not mean we have no idea what the next few episodes will be like. Due to the program being inspired by real-life history, we have an excellent notion as to what the fifth chapter will be about.
It’ll be set across John Major and Tony Blair’s tenures as Prime Minister and see the Queen’s reign move into the 21st Century. The dissolution of the marriage between Diana Spencer and Prince Charles and her subsequent death are likely central themes. Below, we detail everything we know about the show, including who is portraying who (as the entire cast is swapped out for a second time), some images from the set, and a look at Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II.
When will Season 5 of The Crown be available to watch?
The Crown season 5 release date has yet to be confirmed, but we know it’ll come sometime in November 2022. As soon as we have further information, we will share it here. Even though Netflix has not said for sure, it appears likely that the fifth season will also have ten episodes, considering the previous three seasons have had that many.
As the streaming service does not often release new episodes every week, you can expect all of them to become available at once. You will have complete control over the pace at which you watch the entire series.
Season 5 of The Crown’s Cast
Imelda Staunton will replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, beginning with season 5 of The Crown. Colman previously played a role in seasons three and four. Staunton said in a statement after her casting, “I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” “It was a delight to watch both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman bring their own distinct styles to [series creator] Peter Morgan’s scripts.
I am sincerely honored to be joining such an extraordinary creative team and taking The Crown to its conclusion.” After Vanessa Kirby and Helena Bonham Carter, Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip, while Lesley Manville will portray Princess Margaret. The Queen Mother, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Prince Andrew will be played by Marcia Warren, Claudia Harrison, Sam Woolf, and James Murray, respectively.
Actor Timothy Dalton, who played James Bond, appears briefly as Peter Townsend, Margaret’s ex-lover from the first season. When Emma Corrin joined the cast of The Crown in season 4, she played Princess Diana. This time around, she’ll be portrayed as Elizabeth Debicki.
Dominic West plays Prince Charles, the son of Queen Elizabeth and Diana’s husband, and Olivia Williams plays Camilla Parker Bowles, who has been his lover for many years. Senan West will portray William, Diana, and Charles’s eldest child.
Who will play Harry has not been revealed. Diana’s lover Dodi Fayed, who died beside her in 1997, will be played by Khalid Abdalla, while Amir El-Masry is expected to appear as Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed. It is likely that Masry’s episodes will be flashbacks since he is younger than Abdalla. Diana dated Humayun Saeed’s character, Dr. Hasnat Khan before she started dating Dodi.
At Number 10, Jonny Lee Miller (as John Major), Flora Montgomery (Norma Major), Bertie Carvel (Tony Blair), and Lydia Leonard (Cherie Blair) are all-stars. Other supporting cast members include Emma Laird Craig (Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York), Andrew Havill (Robert Fellowes, the Queen’s private secretary and brother-in-law of Princess Diana), Natascha McElhone (Penelope Knatchbull, Lady Romsey), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Monique Ritz), and Prasanna Puwanarajah (Martin Bashir) (Martin Bashir).
Plot of the Crown Season 5
The Crown season 4 stretched from 1977 to 1990, with season 5 anticipated to start up precisely where it left off. We anticipate the 1991 address the Queen made to the country when the United Kingdom joined the United States in the Gulf War and its aftermath will be represented in earlier episodes.
The “amicably” divorce of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in 1992, which Elizabeth would later refer to as her “Annus horribilis” despite being her Ruby Jubilee, is likely to play a significant role. During production, Elizabeth Debicki was papped on set wearing Diana’s legendary “revenge dress,” which she wore to a banquet at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens in 1994.
There will be other divorces discussed alongside Diana and Charles in season 5. Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne, and Captain Mark Phillips went their separate ways in the 1990s. On the other hand, Anne and Andrew have never played particularly significant roles. Therefore it is possible that their private lives will not have much bearing on the program’s outcome.
Prasanna Puwanarajah’s selection as the BBC’s Martin Bashir has also confirmed that the notorious November 20, 1995 episode of Panorama featuring Diana would be included. She caused quite a commotion when she told a reporter, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,”
Of course, Diana sadly died in a vehicle accident two years later, which is another significant incident viewers can expect to see discussed in the fifth episode. We can also prepare for stories involving the 1997 election of Tony Blair as Prime Minister, the fire at Windsor Castle, the Queen’s visit to South Africa, and Prince Philip’s close friendship with aristocrat Penny Brabourne, née Knatchbull.
Given that season 4 focused on Princess Margaret’s issues with physical health, addiction, and depression, it is possible that her death in 2002 will be depicted when Elizabeth’s reign continues into the 21st century in season 5. There is no doubt that she will have a mini-stroke in 1998. Season 4 covers 13 years of history, but whether or not season 5 will be equally ambitious is unknown.
Peter Morgan, the program’s creator, has said in the past that he has no interest in bringing the series up to the present day because it would be impolite to focus on the current events surrounding the Royal Family. If the fifth season ended around the year 2003, then the final season, number 6, would wrap up in the year 2016 — which is not that long ago at all. Timelines are still unclear, though.

The third and final actor to play Queen Elizabeth II on The Crown, Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge in The Harry Potter series), was featured in a teaser film released by Netflix in September 2021. She remarked of Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, “I am delighted to be inheriting the role of Queen Elizabeth from two outstanding actresses.” I promise to work hard to live up to their lofty expectations. Maybe I come across as cool under pressure. Meanwhile, my stomach has been doing flips.
