The Mandalorian Season 3 Officially Renewed: Disney+ Release Date Status, Cast, Plot & Other Details

Disney doesn’t do things halfway, and after the end of season two of The Mandalorian, fans are dying to know what comes next for the show.

At least we know that season three is coming, which is great news for fans of Mando and his cute muppet friend. Now, all we have to do is wait for it.

Even though there are always new Star Wars spin-offs coming out, like The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka and Andor, The Mandalorian is still one of the most popular shows in the galaxy.

Here’s what you need to know about season three of The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Release Date

As part of the Star Wars events on May 26, 2022, producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni announced that season 3 of The Mandalorian will come out in February 2023. Then Ahsoka will come along later that same year.

People had been talking about when it could be for a long time, and even the cast wasn’t sure for sure.

On The Rich Eisen Show, Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Moff Gideon, said, “You’ll get it as soon as possible.

“I have a few more things to complete in order to put the finishing touches on my work. But I believe it will happen this summer. There is no specific date yet, but it will be announced soon.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will premiere in late 2022 or early 2023, according to a significant interview with Pedro Pascal and other emerging stars of the galaxy for Vanity Fair.

TVLine has previously claimed that The Mandalorian would arrive in December, in line with past seasons’ release schedules.

There will be no more adventures with Din Djardin and Grogu in 2022, but at least we have the newly published Obi-Wan Kenobi series to keep us entertained in the meantime.

More about Season 3 of Mandalorian

Still, we got some information about what will happen in Season 3. One change is that The Mandalorian director Rick Famuyiwa, who was in charge of episodes in Seasons 1 and 2 and will be back for Season 3, has been made an executive producer. Famuyiwa made a joke about how he “just found out now.”He continued: “For some reason, Jon [Favreau] saw my film Dope and said, ‘That’s Star Wars material.’”

There will be a lot more information about Mandalore in Season 3, including a trip to Mandalore and a lot more from Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze. When asked where Bo-head Katan’s is in Season 3, Sackhoff joked, “My head is still attached to my body, and that is good.”

But the teaser trailer that was only shown at Star Wars Celebration on Thursday gave us a better look at Season 3. This time, though, the trailer was longer and had a lot of new footage, such as Emily Swallow’s Armorer hitting an alien with a tool, a broken-down Star Destroyer, and Babu Frik (and other Babu Friks!). There are a lot of Mandalorian warriors in the footage, and they get into a lot of action-packed skirmishes. Oh, and the last shot of the long teaser was a wide shot from above of Mandalore’s ruins.

What will season 3 of The Mandalorian be about?

Season two of The Mandalorian ended with a cliffhanger that left a lot of people wondering what will happen in season three.

As previously speculated, the post-credits scene was intended to set up an entirely separate plot that revolved around the relationship between Fennec Shand (Temuera Morrison) and Boba Fett (Ming-Na Wen). The Book of Boba Fett was the only one that sprang to mind. This is more of a side narrative to the main Mandalorian arc than a standalone story.

“When I was told I was going to become a series regular, I just automatically assumed it was for The Mandalorian season three,” Ming-Na Wen told Digital Spy. “And then when the scripts came out, it said 301, 302, 303, 304. So I just assumed I was signing on – because it doesn’t say The Mandalorian on my contracts.

“So for two weeks, while I was working with Tem and Robert [Rodriguez], I had no idea that I was actually shooting the spin-off [laughs].

“When the crew and the cast found out, they were dying. It was so crazy. So, yeah, it was wonderful to finally discover that I was shooting The Book of Boba Fett [laughs]. They call it The Mandalorian 2.5, in a way. So I wasn’t all wrong.”

Even if you’ve read The Book of Boba Fett and already know what’s going on, here’s a little spoiler for you: the last episodes of Boba Fett lay up the idea for The Mandalorian’s upcoming season.

Because of their bloodthirsty background, Boba and Fennec are unwilling to be seen as heroes by the audience as the concert comes to a close. Fennec’s response? “We are not suited for this,” Boba even admits. “What if not us?”

When a stranger brings them a melon, this question is answered. To the commanders of the cyborg street gang known as the Mods, Fett hands it over. It’s possible that these figures may replace Boba Fett as Jabba the Hutt’s successor, allowing Boba the opportunity to return to bounty hunting. If not the torch, at least a passing of the melon here.

After that, we catch a sight of Mando and Grogu taking off in the air.

This is how we envisioned the narrative progressing from there: Mando and Grogu’s reunion has finally taken place in Boba Fett’s Mandalorian season three. (Here, we’ve gone into great detail to assist you.)

That’s a relief, to say the least. When Grogu and Mando were torn apart, it appeared as if the show’s entire premise was in jeopardy. We’d like to express our gratitude to the maker for reuniting them, as would Pascal.

“It was scary, wasn’t it? To be separated like that,” Pascal said (via Empire). “Jon [Favreau] and Dave [Filoni, showrunners] called me, and they told me that they would be bridging seasons two and three with The Book Of Boba Fett, as far as Mandalorian and Grogu were concerned. I just thought that was brilliant.”

“What I didn’t expect is such a beautiful, lonely episode that Bryce Dallas Howard directed so incredibly. And also, for the reunion to be precious, but also just quite sudden and natural.”

Bryce Dallas Howard, who directed the second season episode “The Heiress,” talked to Digital Spy about how the show isn’t afraid to go into parts of the Star Wars universe that casual fans might not know about.

“I think it’s a really fine balance, of course,” she said. “As an actor, I’m familiar with those kind of questions because, for example, with working in the Jurassic franchise, it’s like, ‘OK, we can have fun with some deep cuts for the fans but, at the end of the day, it’s about a good story, well told.'”

“‘What is that balance? How might something that has been established in The Lost World or whatnot play a factor into the storytelling for Jurassic World: Dominion?'”

She also Added: “If you’re telling a story that is a biopic and there’s a bunch of smaller characters – but you can go and read about all of them, because they existed, and their lives are well-documented and whatnot – it’s only going to better inform the biopic that’s centring on the one character.

“Because you will have these fully-fleshed-out other characters that, even though it’s not centring on them, they’re a part of the narrative.”

Now that we know there will be three new spin-off shows, these quotes make a lot more sense. Rangers of the New Republic, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett all take place at the same time as The Mandalorian, so don’t be surprised if they connect to the main show in some way, as BoBF already has. In fact, season three might directly set up all of them.

Even though we don’t know much about Rangers of the New Republic yet, the Ahsoka spin-off was pretty much a given after the character’s first live-action appearance in season two of The Mandalorian. And, of course, Boba’s solo work is already out there.

“Even though they’re different episodes, it’s not like typical episodic television,” he continued. “It’s not a whodunnit, it’s not a dark comedy, it’s not a procedural. It’s so many different things, and it’s action-adventure on top of that. As a director, you get a chance to exercise your talent, and also your ability to deliver in those different areas.”
