When Davidson was persuaded to perform at a DC strip club by a childhood friend, his stand-up career officially started in 1986. It was a positive experience, and over the next few years, he gave more performances in Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
He eventually began opening for legendary performers like Kenny G, Patti LaBelle, and Starpoint. He had won the Apollo Theater amateur stand-up competition by 1987. Satisfied with his potential for success as a professional, Tommy moved to North Hollywood.
After coming to California, he began doing stand-up at the Comedy Store. He also got to know people like Martin Lawrence and Robert Townsend during this time. He made several appearances before going on “The Arsenio Hall Show.”
In addition to his stand-up career, Davidson had a lot of success in a variety of TV and movie roles. In 1989, he made his television debut on “CBS Summer Playhouse.” After that, he played a variety of roles in 125 episodes of “In Living Color” in the early 1990s. His first significant motion picture role came in 1991 with “Strictly Business.” In the early 1990s, Davidson secured roles in motion pictures such as “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.”
