Professional Career
Wembanyama made his professional debut with Nanterre 92 under Pascal Donnadieu in two games in 2019–20. He mostly played in LNB Espoirs, the French under-21 division, and the under-18 team.
In the EuroCup versus Brescia on October 29, 2019, Wembanyama made his professional debut for 31 seconds. At 15 years, 9 months, and 25 days old, he was the second-youngest EuroCup player behind Stefan Petković.
Wembanyama played for Nanterre’s under-18 team in the Adidas Next Generation event (ANGT) Kaunas qualification event in February 2020. He defeated Zaragoza’s under-18 team on February 8 with 22 points, 15 rebounds, and an ANGT-record nine blocks.
He led the tournament in blocks and earned all-tournament team honours in Kaunas with 15.8 points, 12 rebounds, 2.8 steals, and six blocks per game. He averaged 10.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game with the Espoirs, largely off the bench.
Wembanyama divided time between Nanterre’s senior and under-21 sides in 2020–21 and signed with Centre Fédéral in the Nationale Masculine 1. He made his LNB Pro A debut on 23 September 2020, getting one rebound in four minutes against JL Bourg.
A viral video of Wembanyama playing two-on-two pick-up against Rudy Gobert and Vincent Poirier was released in October. He suffered a stress fracture in his fibula during an Espoirs game against BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque on December 12, requiring eight weeks of recuperation.
Wembanyama missed the ANGT Valencia qualification tournament. After missing two and a half months with injury, he started playing more with the seniors. Wembanyama had season-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds in a 99–87 triumph over Orléans Loiret on 25 May 2021.
