Early life and family
Born in Portsmouth, Va., Wanda Sykes is an American comedian. When she was in the third grade, her family relocated to Maryland. She was born to Marion Louise (née Peoples) and Harry Ellsworth Sykes. Her mother worked as a banker and her father was a colonel in the United States Army. Harry, her older brother, is a great-uncle.

A 1683 court case involving Elizabeth Banks, an indentured servant and free white lady who gave birth to Mary Banks, a biracial kid, was used to trace her heritage back to her mother’s free status. While attending high school, Sykes was a member of the honour society Alpha Kappa Alpha at Arundel High School in Gambrills, Maryland. Personal life
Until his death in 1998, Sykes was married to producer Dave Hall for eight years. It was in November 2008, at a same-sex marriage demonstration in Las Vegas, that she openly acknowledged her homosexuality. Sykes married Alex Niedbalski, a French lady she met in 2006, a month earlier. Niedbalski gave birth to a set of fraternal twins in April 2009, naming them Olivia and Lucas after the couple’s daughters and sons.
When Sykes was 40, she finally told her religiously strict parents, Marion and Harry, about her lesbian orientation, and they were shocked. As a result of their refusal to attend Alex’s wedding, they and Sykes fell out for a while, but they’ve since reunited.
On Ellen DeGeneres’ show on September 19, 2011, Sykes revealed that she had been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ earlier in the year (DCIS). However, despite the fact that DCIS is non-invasive “stage zero breast cancer,” Sykes chose to have a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer.
