Early life and family

Born in Portsmouth, Va., Wanda Sykes is an American comedian. When she was in the third grade, her family relocated to Maryland. She was born to Marion Louise (née Peoples) and Harry Ellsworth Sykes. Her mother worked as a banker and her father was a colonel in the United States Army. Harry, her older brother, is a great-uncle.

Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr. investigated Sykes’s family history for an episode in 2012. A 1683 court case involving Elizabeth Banks, an indentured servant and free white lady who gave birth to Mary Banks, a biracial kid, was used to trace her heritage back to her mother’s free status. History professor Ira Berlin says the Sykes family is “the only such case I know of in which a black family founded in freedom can be traced back to the late 17th century to this day.”

While attending high school, Sykes was a member of the honour society Alpha Kappa Alpha at Arundel High School in Gambrills, Maryland.
