Who is Sonya Eddy?
Eddy made her acting debut in the 1990 production of Zora Is My Name by Ruby Dee. The Comedy of Errors, The Witch in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and Bloody Mary in South Pacific were among his other theatre credits.
She relocated to Los Angeles and subsequently starred in sitcoms such as Married… with Children, The Drew Carey Show, Murphy Brown, Seinfeld, and Home Improvement. She had a recurring role in Joan of Arcadia from 2004 to 2005. In 2006, Eddy began a recurring role as Epiphany Johnson at General Hospital. She was a regular cast member on the spinoff General Hospital: Night Shift from 2007 to 2008. She played Tammy on the truTV comedy series Those Who Can’t go from 2016 to 2019. Eddy passed away on December 19, 2022, at age 55.

What Happened To Sonya Eddy?
Sonya Eddy, who portrayed Epiphany for the past 16 years on the iconic ABC soap opera General Hospital, passed away on Monday. She was 55 years old. Sonya Eddy passed away mid-December due to an infection she suffered during treatment.
Octavia Spencer, a fellow actress, confirmed the tragedy on Instagram on Tuesday, saying,
“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night,” Spencer wrote as her caption under a headshot of Eddy. “The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her 💔🕊️.”
TMZ reports that Eddy acquired an “uncontainable” illness on December 9 during a routine procedure. Several days later, she was readmitted to the hospital and was eventually placed on life support. In 2006, Eddy, who was a qualified vocational nurse in real life, made her debut as GH’s no-nonsense, big-hearted nurse. In 2007, the character moved to the short-lived SoapNet spinoff GH: Night Shift.

GH exec producer Frank Valentini lamented on Twitter,
“I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy; I truly loved her as an actress and friend. The lights in the hub of the nurse’s station will now dim, but her spirit and light will live on in the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed.”
Emmy and NAACP Image Award-winning comedian and celebrity host Loni Love described Eddy as “a fantastic and creative actress.”
