On December 4, 1964, Adelaide “Addie” (née Bianchi), an English teacher, and Gary A. Tomei, a trial lawyer, welcomed Tomei into the world in Brooklyn, New York. Her paternal grandparents reared her in part, and she has a younger brother, actor Adam Tomei.
Tomei’s parents are both of Italian heritage; her mother’s family is from Sicily and Tuscany, and her father’s family is from Calabria, Campania, and Tuscany. In 1982, she received her diploma from Edward R. Murrow High School.
Tomei was raised in Brooklyn’s Midwood district. She was inspired to act as a career while there after being enthralled with the Broadway productions that her theater-loving parents took her to.

Tomei played Maggie Lauten in the first season of the 1986 sitcom A Different World after As the World Turns. Her film debut was a brief role as waitress Mandy in the 1984 comedy The Flamingo Kid.
