Who was Aris Hamper?
For decades, Grand Rapidians were treated to the dulcet tones of famed radio host Aris Hampers, whose given name was Aris Peter Hampers. Hampers was born and reared in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Before pursuing his education at Western Michigan University, he graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. Born from a musical family, he sang and played keyboards in a band called the Soulbenders in the late 1960s. Their 1967 single “I Can’t Believe in Love” was a regional smash.

After achieving success with his band Phlegethon and their song “Last Voyage Home,” Aris Hampers decided to pursue a career in radio. He has been with WLAV for a long time and was recognized for his deep voice.Aris is survived by his sister Dean (and her husband Valerie), his nieces Viviana (and her husband Rob) and Marisa (and their husbands Theodoros) and their children, five great-nephews and great-nieces, his cousins Maria (and her husband Peter), Jim (and his wife Vasiliki), Helene (and her husband Andrew) Christopoulos, and many other devoted cousins and dear friends.

What happened to Aris Hampers?
Sources claim that on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at the age of 73, legendary Grand Rapids radio host Aris Hampers lost his fight with throat cancer. His relatives have not yet made a public comment about his passing. Accordingly, there is a lack of information about his funeral. In December of the same year (2019), Aris revealed that cancer had rendered him speechless. In February 2016, he noticed a shift in his voice, but a medical examination of his throat revealed no abnormalities. A cancerous tumor impacted the hampers’ voice box in the windpipe, which was first identified in 2018.
